Scope and Contents
The Thomas F. Fitzgerald Papers (MC 89) feature student and professional notebooks and papers, documenting Fitzgerald's education and teaching career at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, from 1918 through 1938. The collection also includes two notebooks from Fitzgerald's brother, Gerald B. Fitzgerald, Rensselaer class of 1927, during his student years. The Thomas Fitzgerald notebooks, arranged chronologically, include notes and problems from RPI courses in surveying, thermodynamics, machine design, mechanics, hydraulics, and more. His professional notebooks include notes and problems for courses which he taught (hydraulics, dynamics of machines, etc.), and notes which were possibly taken as part of his consulting work, such as "Tests on coal and oil" (1932). Additional Thomas Fitzgerald materials include an annotated copy of Elements of Steam Engineering (1914), and miscellaneous papers containing syllabi, notes, Rensselaer teaching contracts, and correspondence. The Gerald Fitzgerald notebooks include two notebooks from physics and electrical engineering laboratory classes he took while at Rensselaer in 1925. Also included are miscellaneous notebooks and papers, dates unknown.
