Scope and Contents

This collection (2007-24, 2008-5) contains 18 handmade books by artists affiliated with the Women's Studio Workshop from 1988 to 2007. Each has been published as a limited edition, and many feature unique interpretations of the book format. From accordioned pages to a box of postcards, they represent a wide range of artistic approaches. There is also a small catalog of WSW publications that accompanied several of the books when they were exhibited in Rensselaer's Folsom Library in 2007.

Biographical or Historical Information

The Women’s Studio Workshop (WSW) was founded by artists Ann Kalmbach, Tatana Kellner, Anita Wetzel, and Barbara Leoff Burge in 1974. The founders aimed to develop a space where women artists could share skills and work on new pieces, typically inspired by feminist values. The original studios allotted space for etching, papermaking, and screen printing. The workshop later moved into the Binnewater Arts Center in Rosendale, New York, where it hosts live-in artists, internships, and a Summer Arts Institute. WSW also offers workshops and programs teaching skills and ideals in tune with the overall mission of showcasing women artists. Some of these projects have been featured in traveling exhibitions both within New York State and also around the country.
