Cyrus Hall McCormick II collection

 Collection
Identifier: MC 16

Scope and Contents

The pictures and clippings in this collection (MC 16) of seven albums (volumes) date from 1902 through 1933, and document an interest by McCormick in the various types of bridge construction and in bridges located all over the world. The majority of the pictures are postcards, both colored and black and white. Small and large photographs, newspaper and magazine pictures, and pictures and materials from bridge construction companies' catalogs also document the bridges McCormick was interested in. Six of the seven volumes are Bridges I-VI, while the last volume is labelled "Spain Bridges" and includes solely, large black and white photographs of bridges throughout Spain. The images depict bridges from Europe, Asia, and North America with emphasis on Great Britian, the United States, Germany, France, and Russia are emphasized. Included in the collection are pictures of railroad bridges, covered bridges, lift bridges, aerial bridges, rolling lift bridges, cantilever bridges, chain bridges, suspension bridges, natural arches, rope bridges, and wooden foot bridges to name a few. The arrangment of the first five volumes is random for the most part. The pictures in the sixth volume are classified according to bridge structure: simple, girder, suspension, draw bridge, and arch. In addition, there is a miscellaneous section with the categories "famous bridges" and "natural bridges." These volumes provide an excellent pictorial history of bridges in the world. Though the date span of the images is approximately 1902-1933, the bridges themselves are some of the oldest in the world, for example the Foochow in China, and many natural bridges that cannot be dated here. McCormick's interests covered every possible bridge. Many of the bridges depicted within this collection may no longer exist due to natural causes, to war, or by being superseded by more modern construction. The McCormick collection was given to RPI in 1980 by John T. Horton, a graduate of the Institute in 1952. Horton was a trustee of RPI from 1968-1983 when he became an honorary trustee.
