Biographical Note

Isadore M. Fixman was born October 12, 1905, in Woodbine, New Jersey. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1925 with a degree in electrical engineering. From 1937-1969 he was the treasurer, then president and owner of Hub Electric Inc., in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Fixman was an active alumnus of Rensselaer. He was president of the class of 1927, a Life Patroon, president of the Alumni Association from 1962-1964, and a member of the Institute’s Board of Trustees from 1967-1969. He was also very active in many community and professional organizations in the Chicago area. In the mid-1950s Mr. Fixman became very interested in the history of the Van Rensselaer family, especially Stephen III, and began to collect their correspondence, photographs, and newspaper accounts of their activities. His collecting was eventually extended to the entire Albany-Troy-Schenectady area and encompassed most of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Mr. Fixman had intended to eventually donate his collection to Rensselaer and a his wife, Fannabell S. Fixman, donated the collection to the Institute in 1970 after his death in a plane crash near Indianapolis, Indiana on September 9, 1969. In the early 1970’s, when planning was underway for a new library building, Mrs. Fixman established an endowment to fund the Institute Archives and Special Collections Department. In recognition of Isadore Fixman’s service to the Institute the newly created archives and special collections department were named the Fixman Historical Collections.
