Biographical Note
Washington Augustus Roebling, son of John Augustus and Johanna (Herting) Roebling was born in Saxonburg, Butler County, Pennsylvania on May 26th, 1837. Washington was 13 when his family moved to Trenton, New Jersey, where his father established a factory for the production of wire rope. He attended Trenton Academy for four years, and then entered Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, America’s leading engineering school at the time. Washington graduated from Rensselaer in 1857 with a degree in civil engineering.
