Biographical Note
John T. Crowell was born in 1922, to Morton F. and Frances (Robitaille) Crowell, and grew up in Brockton, MA. He was educated in Brockton schools and the Thayer Academy, a college preparatory school, and entered Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute either in 1941 or 1942. Crowell led an active student life. He belonged to the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, the Masonic Lodge, and had a big interest in yachting. He had also joined the Navy, and in 1942 or 1943, he temporarily left Rensselaer to fight in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, where he worked as a navigator. During his service, he earned the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade. After his service, Crowell came back to Rensselaer to finish his schooling. He graduated in 1947, with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. After graduating, he became a registered Massachusetts Architectural and Structural Engineer, and he worked for Stone and Webster Engineering Corp. for 37 years. In 1957, he married Elizabeth J. Betty Coleman, with whom he had one daughter. He was a member of the St. George Masonic Lodge in Brockton, and served on the South Dennis Historical Commission for six years. He also enjoyed travelling, and together with his wife, the couple visited England, the Caribbean, and Bermuda. Crowell died on July 15th, 2012, at the age of 90.
