Biographical Note

  • 1837 - Born April 15th in Northboro, Massachusetts
  • 1856 - Graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a degree in civil engineering
  • 1856 - Worked as a rodman on the Brooklyn Water Works
  • 1861 - Signed a five year contract wh the government of Peru; appointed as a topographical engineer
  • 1865 - Returned to the U.S. following the dissolution of the Department of Public Works in Peru
  • 1865 - Assistant Engineer at the Brooklyn Water Works
  • 1866 - Chief Engineer on the Brooklyn Park Commission
  • 1867 - Principal assistant engineer on the St. Louis Water Works
  • 1870 - Chief Engineer of the Lowell, Massachusetts Water Works; designed a new water supply
  • 1871 - Chief Engineer of the Boston Water Board; later aapointed city engineer
  • 1880 - Consulting engineer of the Metropolitan Water & Sewage Board of Massachusetts; consulting engineer for many municipal telephone and telegraph companies
  • 1891 - Appointed chief engineer of American Telephone and Telegraph Company
  • 1905 - Resigned from AT&T and eventually all consulting positions due to poor health
  • 1971 - Died March 31, 1917; buried in Northboro, Massachusetts
