Historical Note
George F. Wilson & Co. (originally called Wilson, Duggan & Co.) founded in 1854 in Seekonk, Mass. (later East Providence, R.I.) for the manufacture of all-purpose baking powder, other phosphates and special chemicals, patent medicines, and fertilizer; in 1858 name changed to Rumford Chemical Works sold to Heyden Chemical Corporation in 1948; in 1950 rights to baking powder production sold by Heyden to private owner under name Rumford Company; in 1956 Rumford Chemical Works sold to Essex Chemical Corp.; headquartered in Rumford (East Providence) and Providence, R.I., with offices throughout the world.
